Polaroids
The initial process is simple. The photos are snapshots, instances in everyday life I try to capture candidly. But I know that the camera separates myself from the subjects, who are well aware of the presense of a lens. I can't hide that. It is not until I sift through piles of polaroids and make comparisons and contrasts—based on visual, contextual, or metaphorical similarities—that I can begin to probe beyond what's on the surface and make personal connections that even I wasn't aware of at the time. I find that process painstaking.
